As an undergrad, I explored the number of conserved and non-conserved functional microRNA targets of 23 miRNAs of different evolutionary age. I first did this using experiments where the expression of mouse miRNAs had been perturbed and analysed by microarrays. Currently I'm augmenting this study with data from humans. The focus of my master's thesis is to study microRNAs of the monarch butterfly to help understand how it responds to using different plants as food source. The monarch butterfly depends on the Asclepia genus for food, however these plants are now becoming scarce. Therefore, the ability to feed on other species could aid in the survival of the monarchs.
